The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' access to health services and information. The FCHD Immunization Program is seeking a self-motivated, team oriented Human Services Assistant.

As a Human Services Assistant you will be responsible to:
Provide in-person Spanish interpretation services for limited proficiency English speaking clients in clinic, community site or home visit settings. Works closely with Public Health Nurses and medical personnel to solicit health history information and communicate a plan of care to clients. Translates written materials as directed by Public Health Nurses and medical personnel. Communicates results of health assessments and laboratory tests to clients. Instruct clients about the need for preventative health care and early intervention. Provides culturally sensitive client/community education and health care services. Documents according to agency guidelines and policies. Completes other tasks as assigned

Other duties include:
Accurately enters data and information into appropriate databases, schedules appointments, and document according to agency guidelines and policies.

Note: This is a non-merit E-status position. It cannot exceed 1560 hours per calendar year. Total work hours 18-20 hr. per week in contingency on grant funding. Appointee is not eligible to earn leave, holiday pay or retirement benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school or GED issued by state department of education; plus three years of work experience, including two years in some area of human services (related two-year [associate] degree may be substituted for the required human service experience)

Certificates and Licenses Required: [additional information from class spec]

Valid motor vehicle driver's license.
BLS certification within sixty (60) days of appointment

Necessary Special Requirements:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a Criminal Background Check, a Child Protective Services Registry, a driving record check, to the satisfaction of the employer.

Candidates will have knowledge and experience working in a fast-paced clinical setting.
Ability to reach out and maintain positive community relationships.
Experience working with diverse populations.
Possess exceptional verbal and written communication bilingual skills; candidates must pass language proficiency exam.
Experience working as a medical interpreter in a clinical setting.
Experience using a team approach for service delivery.
Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, work well with multi-disciplinary team members and community partners.
Ability to exercise tact, discretion, initiative, and independent judgment. Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact in a friendly, service-oriented and professional manner.
Ability to organize information and records.
Models outstanding customer service skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other information systems such as an electronic health records system
Preferred candidates will be bilingual in English/Spanish.

Physical Requirements:
Employee is required to walk, stand, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs and carry equipment up to 25 pounds in weight as required for the position. Uses hands to grasp, handle or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to drive a vehicle. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
