About President Lincoln’s Cottage

President Lincoln’s Cottage is a historic site and museum located on a beautiful campus in Washington, DC. As the home where Abraham Lincoln lived for over a quarter of his presidency, the Cottage is a place of reflection, engagement, and inspiration. We host mission-driven programs, educational experiences, and private events.

We are seeking reliable and detail-oriented freelance Events Assistants to support our Event Manager in delivering exceptional event experiences and ensuring smooth operations during public and private programs. This is a contract role.

Position Overview

The Events Assistant will play a key role in the setup, execution, and breakdown of events hosted at President Lincoln’s Cottage. This contractor will work closely with the Event Manager to ensure events run efficiently, safely, and in alignment with the site’s mission and historic preservation standards.

This is an hourly, per event, contract-based role with variable weekly hours depending on the event schedule (typically evenings and weekends).

Key Responsibilities

At the direction of the Event Manager, the Event Assistant will:
Assist with setup and execution of scheduled events, including weddings and corporate functions.
Help ensure space use guidelines are followed by site rental clients and vendors.
Prepare event spaces, including moving chairs, tables, signage, and supplies while maintaining respect for historic areas.
Greet guests and event participants, offering high-quality customer service.
Monitor event flow, troubleshoot issues, and communicate needs to the Event Manager promptly.
Assist with breakdown, cleanup, and reset event spaces.
Represent President Lincoln’s Cottage with professionalism, courtesy, and mission-aligned enthusiasm.

Qualifications

Prior experience working in events or hospitality preferred.
Schedule flexibility with availability to work on a contract per-event basis, as needed, usually evening and weekends.
Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with guests, clients, and vendors.
Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
Physical Demands: Able to lift, slide, and carry up to 30 lbs. Able to stand for an extended period of time.
Professional appearance and demeanor consistent with a historic and cultural institution.

Contract Details

Hourly contractor position: $35 an hour with a minimum of 4 hours
Contractors are responsible for their own transportation and availability for event shifts.
