Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the principal, the cook implements the cycle menu, purchases and prepares the food, completes Child Care and Adult Food Program guidelines and paperwork and supports center staff with nutrition activities in the classroom.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Implements the cycle menu in accordance with CCAFP policies, procedures, and established practices; budget requirements; and the guidelines established by the Child Care and Adult Food Program.
2. Purchases food needed for meals and snacks served on site and for field trips.
3. Prepares, organizes, and sets up the food for meals and snacks.
4. Joins the children and other staff at the table during mealtimes whenever possible.
5. Cleans and maintains kitchen, food service utensils, equipment, and food storage areas to standards mandated by Maryland Health Department and Maryland licensing childcare agency and best practices with regards to food safety and sanitation.
6. Purchases and provides set up of foods for nutrition curriculum and children’s cooking projects in the classroom.
7. Maintains all required Child Care and Adult Food Program paperwork. Paperwork includes menu production records, monthly adjustment sheets, food transport records, inventories, cycle menus, attendance sheets and food purchase receipts. Compiles monthly reports accurately. Turns in all monthly Child Care and Adult Food Program documentation on time.
8. Posts and maintains all required Child Care Food public notices.
9. Refers child nutrition concerns to school staff and principal.
10. Participates in team meetings, required in-services, and all cook networking and training.
11. Communicates and works effectively with other staff members.
12. Trains Assistant Cook and potential substitutes in the CCFP paperwork and in all other aspects of the cook’s roles and responsibilities.
13. Other duties as assigned.

Keep abreast of current knowledge of the CCAFP and nutrition in the early childcare field.
Completes and reports any symptoms of child abuse to supervisor and/or child abuse hotline.
Completes daily health checks regarding hygiene, safety, and overall well being of the children.
Assures a healthy, safe, clean and developmentally appropriate environment for children.

Therefore, each employee must at all times be emotionally stable and able to function effectively with children, who may have mental or behavioral health problems. The staff must be able to demonstrate appropriate daily behavior, appropriate expression of emotions, as well as appropriate role modeling. Hostility, aggression and unnecessary or inappropriate physical actions as well as inappropriate emotional expression are not acceptable.
