Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill
multiple Seasonal CDL Operator positions in the
Office of Highway Maintenance.
About the Position
Incumbents perform manual tasks in connection with road construction, highway maintenance, storm drain maintenance and/or landfill operations. Duties require initiative and independent judgment in the care and operation of equipment, as well as mechanical aptitude and skillful coordination of eye, hand, and foot movements. This position requires a Commercial Driver’s License - A/B (restricted or unrestricted) and DOT card at all times.
These are additional staff support positions and will be filled temporarily for the 2025 Snow and Ice Season. Hours will vary depending on the needs of the department and weather conditions. Employees will be expected to work overtime, if needed.
About the Agency
The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area - all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

One (1) year experience operating light power equipment

Valid Class A, Class B, or equivalent commercial driver's license (CDL) with mandatory endorsements is required upon appointment in order to perform job-related duties and responsibilities

Candidate must successfully complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for equipment/vehicles associated with this class of work

Must have a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical exam

Conditions of Employment:Upon selection, the candidate must:
Submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration report that reflects a satisfactory driving record
Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug and alcohol test; random drug tests will be conducted upon employment
Wear required safety equipment, shoes and uniforms while on duty
Possess and maintain a valid Class “A” or "B" Commercial Driver’s License
Be able to work outdoors in all types of weather and participate as an essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency special activities, as assigned.
