POSITION SUMMARY:
We are currently recruiting for seasonal and emergency Snow Removal Transportation Operators to assist during winter weather events and as needed throughout the snow season. This position requires a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to operate snow removal equipment and other heavy vehicles safely and efficiently.
The Transportation Operator II is responsible for performing a variety of roadway maintenance, snow removal, and traffic control duties to ensure safe travel for the public during inclement weather and other emergency situations. This role requires flexibility to work extended and irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays during snow or emergency operations. This position's pay rate is $28-30 per hour and is located in various locations in VA.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate snowplows, salt spreaders, and other winter maintenance equipment to remove snow and ice from roadways, bridges, and parking lots.
- Perform traffic control and flagging operations to ensure the safety of work crews and the traveling public.
- Conduct manual labor tasks such as cleaning and maintaining equipment, hand mowing, weed eating, shoveling snow, and clearing debris from roadways and rights-of-way.
- Inspect, service, and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles to ensure proper working condition.
- Assist with road repair and maintenance projects, including patching potholes, placing traffic cones and signs, and supporting asphalt and concrete work as needed.
- Respond to emergency situations such as floods, storms, and other natural disasters to support recovery and roadway clearance.
- Work collaboratively with team members and supervisors to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality work performance.
- Participate in staff meetings, safety briefings, and required training sessions.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills in English.
- Strong commitment to safety and adherence to established work zone and traffic control procedures.
- Proven ability to deliver high-quality customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in varying weather and environmental conditions.
- Solid analytical and problem-solving skills to assess situations and determine appropriate responses.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and adapt to changing work priorities.
- Capacity to work under pressure during emergency operations and extended hours when required.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent, preferred.
- Previous experience in snow removal, roadway maintenance, or construction work is highly desirable.
- Completion of a flagging certification course (to be provided by VDOT upon hire).
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean driving record is required.
- Ability to operate light to medium-duty trucks and related equipment.
- Steel toe boots and appropriate safety gear are required.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times.
