POSITION SUMMARY
The Clinical Laboratory Assistant collects and processes specimens to help the laboratory produce accurate results. Assistants prepare specimens and carry out basic laboratory support procedures. Laboratory support procedures include environmental monitoring, mixing chemical solutions, ordering and storing supplies. Laboratory assistants lab have clerical tasks such as greeting patients, informing them of the procedures, supporting inquiry by clinical medical staff, answering phones and emails, and maintaining records.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Follow patient identification and patient safety procedures to ensure an environment that if free of medical error
- (Optional) Collects laboratory specimens (blood, urine, cultures and misc.) according to laboratory procedures
- Processing laboratory specimens to prepare for analysis according to department procedures
- Evaluate specimen integrity and initiate technical evaluation when integrity is in question (clotted specimens, hemolysis, lipemia, icterus, specimen labeling, specimen integrity, etc.)
- Perform specimen rejection follow up to initiate documentation and recollection
- Package and transport laboratory specimen to testing department or reference laboratory send out types according to organizational policies.
- Perform laboratory support role including environmental monitoring, equipment maintenance, safety checks biohazard cleaning and inventory/order processes
- Complete and evaluate all quality documentation without omission and refer situations that fall out of acceptable range
- Establish and maintain positive customer relations by being friendly, courteous, helpful, neat, and clean to present a professional image.
- Complete and submit all administrative forms such as daily route reports, supply requisitions, and accident reports.
- Participate in the quality of the laboratory through evaluation of practices, reporting of quality events and suggesting areas for improvement.
- Demonstrate the initiative to perform additional tasks.
- Maintain competency associated with laboratory specimen storage and transport.
- Effectively read and follow written instructions.
- Utilize a computer for laboratory support functions and know basic Microsoft Office.
- Work with a team to achieve department goals and objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED equivalency required.
- Previous experience in a laboratory or medical facility preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and computer experience preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens
- Possible exposure to hazardous chemicals
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to climb stairs, lift 35lbs, sit or stand for long periods, and walk/bend down
- Visual and auditory acuity and good eye/hand coordination
DIRECT REPORTING

- Reports to the Laboratory Supervisor for the applicable department
- There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position.
