The Assistant Tennis Coach supports the Head Tennis Coach in all aspects of the boys’ tennis program and contributes to a positive, developmentally appropriate athletic experience consistent with the school’s mission and values. Reporting to the Head Tennis Coach, the Assistant Tennis Coach is responsible for developing and communicating an inspiring vision for how the St. Albans Tennis program will compete at a high level in the Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) and Independent School League (ISL) in the Greater Washington, DC area and deliver the values of the Athletics Department to all players. The successful candidate will understand, appreciate, and capitalize on the role that athletics play in helping students learn to build together, work together, and achieve together, from a range of backgrounds, perspectives, and identities. The successful candidate will also further develop that understanding and appreciation in their athletes.
Coaching & Player Development:
- Assist the Head Tennis Coach in planning, organizing, and conducting daily practices focused on skill development, conditioning, match strategy, and rules of the game
- Lead developmentally appropriate drills for Lower School students, fostering a fun and engaging introduction to the sport
- Provide individual and small-group instruction to student-athletes to improve tennis fundamentals, technique, and match play performance
- Reinforce proper training habits, sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect for teammates, opponents, and officials
- Support player development across a range of skill levels, from novice to competitive players
Practices, Matches & Competitions:
- Assist with supervision and coaching during practices, scrimmages, matches, and tournaments
- Help prepare lineups, drills, and warm-ups as directed by the Head Coach
- Support in-match coaching responsibilities in accordance with league and school guidelines
- Assist with travel to away contests as required
Student Supervision & Safety:
- Supervise student-athletes at all times during practices, matches, team meetings, and travel
- Ensure adherence to school policies, athletic department expectations, and safety protocols
- Work closely with athletic trainers to ensure the health and safety of every tennis player at St. Albans and model commitment to player health in every setting.
- Promote a safe and inclusive environment that prioritizes student well-being and appropriate conduct
Program & Administrative Support:
- Assist with equipment management, including setup, breakdown, inventory, and maintenance of tennis equipment and facilities
- Support administrative tasks such as attendance tracking, communication with players, and coordination with the athletic department
- Collaborate with the Head Coach and athletic staff to support the overall goals of the tennis program
School Community Engagement:
- Serve as a positive role model consistent with the school’s mission and values
- Communicate professionally and respectfully with students, colleagues, and families as appropriate
- Participate in required meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities
- Abide by the standards of the IAC and the School.
- Represent the values and standards of the community, including those related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and adhere to the policies and expectations stated in the Faculty-Staff Handbook.
The position may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with independent school culture, mission-driven programs, and academic-athletic integration preferred
- Demonstrated ability to foster positive team culture, sportsmanship, and character development aligned with the values of an Episcopal prep school
- Strong communication skills with students, colleagues, and families
- Coaching experience within an Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) or similarly competitive league environment is advantageous
- Possess extensive experience teaching tennis mechanics and strategy, with a demonstrated deep passion for and knowledge of the game
