Building Engineer Job Description
Experienced building engineer for our commercial real estate properties in DC. This person needs to have excellent trouble-shooting and customer service skills. The position is for a full-time Engineer who will take ownership of their responsibilities, communicate with the building owners and perform tasks as necessary, from exterior clean up and conference set up to mechanical preventive maintenance and repairs. The position is based at a small commercial property in the Dupont Circle area downtown and includes some split time at our properties nearby. Due to the small size of the base property, some basic porter responsibilities are required.
This is a full-time position with benefits. The Building Engineer must have the skills to maintain and repair building equipment, electric, plumbing, air-conditioning and heating systems.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Comply with all company policies and procedures and adhere to company standards.
- Communication regularly in-person, and electronically and provide stellar customer service.
- Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
- Operation of controls and Building Management Systems.
- Maintain and repair building fixtures and equipment.
- Inspect and diagnose problems and figure out the best way to correct them.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that building mechanical equipment operates efficiently.
- Fix or replace faulty electrical switches, outlets, and devices. Ensure light fixtures are operational, change light bulbs and ballast as necessary.
- Move furniture, equipment and materials required in normal building operations to include conference room set up.
- Comply with work order system to include interpreting work orders, performing work requested and completing work orders per instruction. Complete Work Orders and Preventive Maintenance paperwork in a timely and professional manner.
- Use appropriate tools, equipment and cleaning chemical(s) per manufacturer's specifications.
- Perform plumbing, corrective and preventive maintenance, using tools and equipment as required. Clean and unclog sinks, toilets, and floor drains. Repair sinks faucets and toilet.
- Performing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) maintenance on air conditioning units, fans, air handlers, water heaters, converters, duct work and system controls.
- Work various schedules and shifts, including after-hours emergency call.
- Perform basic Porter responsibilities to include interior and exterior cleaning.
- Perform any other miscellaneous duties as requested.
Qualifications and Skills
- Must have a current driver’s license.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- DC 3rd Class or equivalent Stationary Engineer’s License
- Basic computer skills for responding electronically to work orders and using email.
- Must have 3-5 years’ work related experience as a Building Engineer in commercial and residential applications.
- Working knowledge of carpentry, drywall repair, basic electricity, painting, plumbing, HVAC and cleaning duties.
