We are a high complexity anatomic pathology laboratory located in McLean, VA, in search of a very reliable, dependable, and experienced histotechnologist with strong interpersonal and organizational skills capable of functioning independently in team-oriented environment. A high degree of accuracy is required, as well as efficiency, thoroughness, adaptability, and integrity. Position is full-time or part-time (preferably am) and available immediately.
- Principal responsibilities involve embedding processed tissues (wide variety of specimen tissue types, particularly skin, gastrointestinal, and urologic tissue), microtomy of paraffin embedded tissue (must have confidence to efficiently cut and mount high quality tissue sections from a variety of tissue types, including needle biopsies), and operation of automated H&E autostainer/coverslipper and laboratory equipment for immunohistochemical and special stains. This individual will also be able to perform high complexity technical procedures including but not limited to gross handling/processing of clinical biopsy specimens and preparation for tissue processing and histologic examination (training provided). Manual dexterity, keen observational skills and sound judgment are required; attention to detail is critical to the successful performance of this job.
Qualified individual will also be responsible for performing technical procedures including the following activities:
- Contribute to daily operation and activities of histology laboratory, including but not limited to accessioning and labeling and filing of glass slides.
- Maintains and orders, as needed, inventory and supplies required to efficiently operate the section.
- Ensure the daily, weekly, monthly, and as needed maintenance on instruments and equipment is completed to maximize instrument operation and assure consistent specimen quality outcomes.
- Perform troubleshooting procedures as needed and determines when equipment service or routine repairs is required by notifying service personnel when more complex problems occur.
- Performs related general duties including general laboratory housekeeping and maintaining safety records.
- Performs quality assurance activities and procedures, including but not limited to block and slide match, reagent monitoring and reports discrepancies per standard operating procedure.
- Maintain records and documentation in compliance with required rules and regulations of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
Special knowledge and skills:
- At least some knowledge of normal human tissue morphology is essential; must be able to perform paraffin sectioning and to recognize discrepancies and take corrective action.
- Individual should have strong written communication and interpersonal skills and work successfully as part of a team; must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments.
- Laboratory environment – must be familiar with and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with safety data sheets (SDS); use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.
- Staff will be required to complete annual competency review and must insure compliance with all standard operating policies and procedures of the laboratory and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices.
Qualifications:
Individual must meet minimum CLIA requirements for high complexity testing (42CFR493.1489 (b)); evidence of compliance with records of qualifications including diploma and transcript and work history in related field:
Bachelor’s degree a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, OR
Associate’s degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution (Additional related experience can substitute for education).
- Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
- Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT/HTL program, preferred.
- Minimum of three years of experience, preferred.
