Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist
The Clinical Support Specialist will perform essential clinical, laboratory, and patient support tasks. We are seeking a versatile team member who is either a Certified Medical Assistant or a Certified Phlebotomist. The role focuses heavily on patient vitals, medical history intakes, and specimen collection (including blood draws and drug screens), with occasional administrative and front-desk tasks as needed to support clinic operations. This position works alongside our physicians and nursing team.
Responsibilities and Tasks
- Perform blood draws (venipuncture) and prepare lab samples for required initial medical workups and routine screening.
- Collect urine drug screens strictly according to behavioral health chain-of-custody protocols (including observed collection as required).
- Prepare paperwork and lab specimens to be securely packaged and sent to reference laboratories.
- Obtain and record patient vitals, medical histories, and intake screening results in the electronic medical record (EMR) while maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Place and read PPD (Tuberculosis) skin tests for routine client or staff health screenings as required by state regulations.
- Maintain and sanitize laboratory stations and specimen collection rooms in accordance with safety and infection control standards.
- Coordinate clinic administrative activities when needed, including answering telephones, checking in clients, and scheduling appointments.
- Verify insurance eligibility and benefits (including Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial payers) and assist with treatment pre-authorizations as required.
- Perform clerical tasks such as maintaining electronic medical records, file auditing, and preparing client data reports.
Qualifications and Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Professional Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA) OR a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT).
- Competent use of computer systems, software, and Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
- Knowledge of insurance guidelines (Medicaid, Medicare, and managed care) and third-party payer processes.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, safety hazards, and infection control precautions.
- Excellent patient service skills, with an empathetic, non-judgmental approach to individuals undergoing substance use disorder treatment.
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Competencies and Abilities
- Ability to maintain quality control standards and react calmly and effectively in emergency or stressful situations (including crisis de-escalation).
- Ability to use laboratory and clinical equipment properly to administer outpatient support.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional, supportive boundaries and effective working relationships with patients, staff, and medical practitioners.
