About Josephine
Josephine is a bustling French brasserie and bar located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Set inside a beautifully restored historic building, Josephine combines classic French cuisine, an extensive wine and spirits program, craft cocktails, and warm, polished hospitality.
We are looking for an experienced, energetic, and hospitality-driven Bartender to join our Front of House team. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a high-volume environment while maintaining the attention to detail, product knowledge, and genuine hospitality expected in an upscale restaurant.
What You'll Do
As a Bartender at Josephine, you will be responsible for creating an exceptional experience for both bar guests and dining room guests while executing cocktails and beverages quickly, accurately, and consistently.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide warm, attentive, and professional hospitality to every guest
- Prepare classic and contemporary cocktails according to Josephine's recipes and standards
- Develop strong knowledge of our cocktail, spirits, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverage programs
- Provide knowledgeable recommendations and confidently guide guests through beverage selections
- Prepare beverages for both bar guests and dining room service
- Maintain speed and accuracy during high-volume services
- Properly open, set up, stock, maintain, and close the bar
- Maintain appropriate levels of spirits, wine, beer, garnishes, glassware, ice, and other bar supplies
- Follow proper recipes, measurements, pouring standards, and presentation guidelines
- Maintain a clean, organized, and polished bar throughout service
- Accurately enter orders and process guest payments through the POS system
- Communicate effectively with servers, barbacks, hosts, managers, and the culinary team
- Monitor guest alcohol consumption and follow responsible alcohol service practices
- Follow all Virginia ABC regulations and company policies
- Assist with inventory, restocking, prep, and other beverage-program responsibilities as needed
- Participate in pre-shift meetings, tastings, training, and continuing beverage education
- Help create the welcoming, energetic, and polished atmosphere that defines Josephine
What We're Looking For
- Previous bartending experience in a high-volume restaurant, cocktail bar, hotel, or upscale hospitality environment strongly preferred
- Strong working knowledge of classic cocktails, spirits, wine, and beer
- Genuine enthusiasm for hospitality and taking care of guests
- Ability to work quickly without sacrificing quality or attention to detail
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Professional appearance and demeanor
- Ability to remain composed and positive during busy services
- Reliable, punctual, and team-oriented
- Willingness to learn and participate in ongoing beverage education
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
- Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift and carry typical bar supplies
Knowledge of French wine, Cognac, Armagnac, aperitifs, digestifs, and classic French drinking culture is a plus, but we are happy to work with talented bartenders who are eager to learn.
