The Alexandria Library is seeking energetic and reliable staff members to join the Substitute team at the Alexandria Library as a Library Assistant I.

Duties:

Assisting library users in routine selection and location of library materials

Checking library materials in and out for library users

Collecting fees, issuing library cards and revising registration records

Assisting patrons with the use of self-check machines, library catalogs and other databases, Internet computers, printers and copy machines

Shelf-reading, inventory and withdrawal of library materials

Maintenance of one or more sections of the collection

Additional duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities:

Willingness to acquire some knowledge of library practices and techniques

Some knowledge of and interest in literature

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public, in busy and sometimes difficult circumstances

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports

Ability to work both as part of a team, and independently, without constant supervision

An aptitude for customer service

Minimum Requirements:

A two-year college degree

Proficiency in verbal and written English and basic arithmetic and computer skills

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities

Ability to lift and carry at least 15 pounds

Foreign language skills and customer service experience preferred

Schedule: 4 hours per month minimum; available weekdays, nights and weekends

Location: May be asked to work at any Alexandria Library location.

Salary: $21.3054 per hour.

Sunday/Substitute Librarian Position

The Alexandria Library is searching for a part-time Librarian. The incumbent is responsible for assisting customers at the Reference/Information Desk and providing general support for the Adult Services Department.

Duties:

Answers all types of reference questions using print and digital sources in an efficient and courteous manner
Staffs the information desk to assist library customers in person and by phone with inquiries regarding library materials and other sources of information
Assists customers with the online catalog, electronic reference services, and with the automated internet registration and printing
Interprets policies and procedures of the library to the public
Furnishes information about library activities, facilities, rules, and services
Helps customers with other community services provided through the Library
Qualify to become a U.S. passport agent
Other duties as assigned

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Knowledge of reference sources; some knowledge of books and authors
Ability to instruct customers using various technologies
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure
Ability to assist a diverse population of patrons in a calm and courteous manner

Excellent customer service and communication skills, both oral and written
Flexibility and the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment

Preferred Skills:

Knowledge of e-Readers and e-Book mobile applications
Public library experience
Foreign language skills

Minimum Requirements:

Master's Degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited school. Applicant must possess or obtain, within 3 months of hire, a license to practice as a registered professional librarian issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. U.S. Citizenship is required for passport services.

Full-Time (40 Hours a Week) – Beatley Central Library

Under the supervision of the Adult Services Manager, the incumbent is responsible for assisting patrons and providing general support for the Adult Services Department, including programming, collection development and outreach.

Duties:

Answers all types of reference questions using traditional, electronic, and internet sources in an efficient and courteous manner

Staffs the information desk to assist library customers in-person and by phone with inquiries regarding library materials and other sources of information

Assists patrons with the online catalog, electronic reference services, and with automated internet registration and printing

Interprets policies and procedures of the library to the public

Furnishes information about library activities, facilities, rules and services

Assists with maintaining the collection including weeding

Plans, coordinates and leads programs for the public, particularly those related to Library initiatives

Coordinates with AS team to ensure programs are scheduled to meet departmental goals

Participates in outreach initiatives in the local community as assigned

Participates in at least two committees as assigned

Manages and coordinates test proctoring

Coordinating multiple themed monthly book displays with AS & Circ staff

Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

Schedule: Hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the library and will include days, evenings, two Saturdays per month, and possibly Sunday assistance as needed.

Salary: $58,320.86 - $102,632.14 (annually)

Hiring Range: $58,320.86 - $81,757.00 (annually)
