The Apprentice Engineer will perform all assigned training duties under the immediate supervision of the Chief Engineer or a licensed supervisor or Engineer as designated by the Chief Engineer. In the application of these duties, the Authority agrees to conform to the standards, as printed, of the Local 99, I.U.O.E. Joint Apprenticeship Committee. The Apprentice Engineer shall at no time be permitted to stand an Operating Engineer’s watch or to be assigned to a fixed routine, which might interfere with a reasonable training program.
The Apprentice Engineer will assist with skilled work to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable start-up, operation and continuous monitoring of boilers, electric generators, hot water distribution system, chilled water system, and ancillary equipment of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center’s Central Plant. The Apprentice Engineer under the supervision of the Chief Engineer will perform skilled mechanical work in the operation and maintenance of HVAC and accessory equipment and performs selective maintenance on various in-Plant and/or satellite equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the First Class Engineer or First Chief Engineer and/or the Manager of Engineering Services.
- RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs the safe and reliable start-up, operation, maintenance, repair and continuous monitoring of hot water boilers, electric generators, hot water distribution system, chilled water system, and ancillary equipment, taking steps to assure that water quality and water management procedures are followed.
- Performs operation, maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment and accessory equipment including, but not limited to, hydronic hot/cold water distribution systems and their components, packaged and split systems, and air delivery systems.
- Performs selective or assigned maintenance and housekeeping on various in-plant and/or satellite equipment as directed.
- Performs environmental tasks in compliance with local and federal environmental regulations, including proper operation of plant outfall(s).
- Performs daily tours of mechanical space to insure equipment is functioning.
- Maintains accurate, clear and precise operating records and advises supervisor of potential problems.
- Takes proper action after identification of a deficiency and repair of plant equipment.
- Oversees fuel oil and natural gas transfer and storage.
- Takes effective action to reduce the effect of equipment casualties.
- Personally responds to emergencies.
- Performs a variety of other related tasks and duties as assigned.
- QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent.
- Active participant in Local 99 IUOE Apprenticeship program.
- Universal CFC license.
- Valid driver’s license.
