Introduction

This position is in the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC), an independent agency within the District of Columbia government. The mission of the CJCC is to serve as a forum for identifying challenges and generating solutions to enhance public safety and the fair administration of justice for District of Columbia residents, visitors, victims, and justice-involved individuals. The work of the CJCC involves collaborating with over a dozen District and federal agencies and focuses on data analysis, research, training, and technical assistance across key issue areas: violence prevention, juvenile justice, substance use and mental health, and corrections.

This position serves as the central, first point of contact for essential administrative and organizational support within the CJCC. The Staff Assistant handles a wide range of tasks, including scheduling meetings, managing correspondence, and ensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of the office. The responsibilities often involve coordinating travel arrangements, maintaining files, and providing general support to staff and management.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Staff Assistant will conduct fact-finding investigations which involve researching, analyzing, and preparing pertinent data/information incidental to report, statistical studies, special events, and ongoing projects. Examines and develops a variety of background information for use in presenting factual and statistical data for special projects and/or reports. Maintains and controls basic management systems for all incoming action documents within the organization, including documents control, report monitoring systems to remind staff of action requirements and timetables, suitable tracking systems, and correspondence review. Reviews all correspondence and documents prepared for the supervisor's signature for grammatical accuracy, procedural conformity, format compliance, and provision of supporting documents. On one’s own initiative, returns to originator correspondence or document which is considered improper for signature of the supervisor.

Prepares responses to inquiries of a Congressional, governmental, and private sector nature. Notifies the appropriate staff personnel of the need for information or recommends and/or assists staff in preparing responses to inquiries. Develop administrative data for the purpose of preparing special reports related to the program. Research administrative matters, gather facts, define and explore problems, and initiate and maintain necessary contacts in the completion of assignments. Performs an on-going review of administrative and clerical work being done to ensure that business needs are met. Identifies unusual problem areas and makes appropriate recommendations for resolution. Assists in the development of administrative policies and procedures for the office to facilitate accomplishment on a timely basis.

Qualifications & Education

Specialized Experience: This position requires one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lowest grade level in the District of Columbia government. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the line of work of the position and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

Pay Plan, Series, Grade: CS-0301-09

Salary: $54,183 - $69,770

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is not covered under collective bargaining.

Background Check: Incumbent must successfully pass an FBI criminal background check conducted by CJCC as a condition of employment and may be subject to periodic criminal background checks for the duration of your tenure. These background checks will be conducted pursuant to internal CJCC policy, and one must be completed before your first day of work.

The District of Columbia government maintains a drug free work environment policy. All District employees are subject to post-accident/incident and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing.

Residency Requirement: Applicants claiming “Residency Preference” will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
