Position Summary
Assist physicians and nurses in providing specific treatments and procedures and facilitating efficient patient care. Will be required to work at GW Primary Care of Silver Spring, Bethesda Primary Care and the Bethesda Specialty Practice.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assist physicians and/or registered nurses by taking and recording patient histories, height, weight, vital signs.
- Prepares patient for examination by preparing for various specimen collections.
- Administers oral and injectable (intramuscular and subcutaneous) as prescribed by the physician. Competency must be demonstrated to a registered nurse prior to performing such function. Has knowledge of medication actions, proper dosing & side effects.
- Hangs intravenous solutions without additives, monitors infusion rates, and discontinues peripheral intravenous lines.
- Assists physicians with minor procedures i.e., incision & drainage of abscess, breast needle biopsies, colorectal biopsies, breast expansions & minor surgical procedures. Proficient with sterile technique.
- Explains tests and procedures including pre & post-op instructions to patients.
- Retrieves lab results and surgical path reports from computer (as well as reference labs) and communicates results/ data to physician and/or registered nurse. Notifies reference labs for specimen pick-up. Orders lab supplies as directed by registered nurse. Keeps up to date with what insurance company participates with what lab for specimen collections.
Qualifications
Education
- High school graduation, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is necessary.
- Must have received formal training in medical assisting from a vocational-technical high school, post-secondary vocational schools, or community and junior college and have proof of such training, such as a certificate or diploma.
- CPR certified.
Experience
- 1-2 years working experience as a Medical Assistant in general surgery/ambulatory care is necessary.
Licensure
- Certification and Registration as a Medical Assistant.
- Current basic CPR/AED
Physical Requirements
- Walk, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulder frequently in a clinical setting.
- Must be able to occasionally lift or carry and frequently push or pull up to 20 lbs. as part of the role
- Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment
- Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment.
