Sunflower Bakery is a non-profit, social enterprise that uses food as a lever to enable pathways for employment for young adults with learning differences through skilled job training and employment opportunities in the baking and hospitality industries. Sunflower’s workforce development training programs include Pastry Arts and Hospitality Employment and a pre-employment Teen Exposure Program.
Position Overview
Sunflower seeks Pastry Chef/Cake decorator to support our bakery production and pastry arts training program. The Pastry Chef/Cake decorator is an integral and essential member of the Sunflower Bakery organization. They will assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a skilled vocational training program to prepare individuals for gainful employment in baking or related industries. The right candidate will be a positive, compassionate, flexible, and organized personality; will possess the ability to work with a diverse group of people, including individuals with learning differences.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Train individuals with a range of learning differences for acquisition of skills and aptitude needed for employment
- Responsible for both individual production and training of others simultaneously.
- Produce and decorate an array of deserts, to include cakes, pies, bars, cookies and bread
- Oversee food production to ensure food quality, safety, and consistency
- Assist in menu planning, creating new and innovative desserts for seasonal menus
- Maintain recipe accuracy and portion sizes
- Assist kitchen staff with their production, when necessary
- Ensure kitchen cleanliness
Minimum Qualifications
- 2+ years of Professional experience in Pastry- commissary or catering preferred
- Culinary/ Pastry Arts degree preferred
- Servsafe managers certification required within 90 days of hire
- Familiarity with Google and Microsoft office applications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong attention to detail
- Superior piping and cake decorating skills
- Ability to understand, follow, and delegate written and verbal instruction
- Proficient use of Bakery math; able to adjust yield of recipes
- Effective time management skills
- Ability to motivate, educate, and empower others
- Emotional awareness under pressure
- Comfortable in a fast paced, high volume environment
- Experience with systems development and implementation
- Punctual and reliable attendance
- Knowledge of safe sanitation and food handling procedures
- Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and frequently lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work in a standing position for up to 10 hours
Position
These are daytime, hourly positions. Flexibility to work additional hours (evenings, early mornings) during busy holiday periods is required. Sunflower Bakery operates Sunday-Friday, is closed Saturdays and most Jewish Holidays. Typical schedule would be Tuesday- Friday, 8am-3pm. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Sunflower offers a generous benefits package including a 401K plan with employer match. This position reports directly to the Pastry Arts Director.
