Job Summary:
The Lead Barista is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the coffee bar, ensuring high standards of product quality, customer service, and maintaining a positive and efficient work environment. This role combines barista skills with leadership responsibilities, including mentoring and training new baristas, managing inventory, and ensuring the coffee shop runs smoothly during shifts. The Lead Barista will help deliver an exceptional customer experience, from crafting espresso drinks to maintaining a clean and organized space.
Reports To: Assistant General Manager
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, mentor, and train junior baristas and staff on drink preparation, customer service, and safety procedures.
- Create work schedules for baristas to ensure proper coverage and maintain efficient operations.
- Maintain a positive and motivating atmosphere, addressing staff concerns and providing feedback.
- Set a professional example through punctuality, work ethic, and maintaining high standards of service.
Customer Service:
- Greet customers warmly, address their needs, and ensure they have a positive experience.
- Handle customer complaints or concerns, resolving issues quickly and effectively.
- Promote special offers and seasonal drinks to customers.
- Ensure the consistent delivery of high-quality beverages, with attention to detail in presentation and taste.
Barista Duties:
- Prepare espresso drinks, brewed coffee, teas, and other beverages according to company standards.
- Operate coffee machines, grinders, and other equipment safely and efficiently.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the coffee bar, including proper handling of supplies and ingredients.
- Ensure adherence to health and safety regulations, maintaining sanitary conditions in the work area.
Inventory Management:
- Track inventory levels and communicate with the manager regarding supply needs, including coffee beans, milk, syrups, pastries, and other necessary items.
- Assist in receiving deliveries and organizing stock.
- Rotate stock to ensure the freshest ingredients are used and minimize waste.
Quality Control & Product Consistency:
- Ensure all beverages and food items meet quality standards and consistency.
- Conduct regular checks to ensure that all equipment is in working order and maintain or report necessary repairs.
- Follow recipes and procedures strictly to ensure uniformity in taste and presentation.
Administrative & Operational Support:
- Help with opening and closing procedures, including cash handling, balancing tills, and securing the premises.
- Assist with day-to-day operational tasks, including checking and maintaining cleanliness in both front and back-of-house areas.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines and company policies.
Sales & Upselling:
- Actively engage with customers to promote new products, seasonal items, and loyalty programs.
- Keep track of customer preferences to personalize service and increase repeat business.
Experience:
- Experience in Barista experience, with prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred
Skills:
- Strong communication and leadership abilities
- In-depth knowledge of coffee preparation, brewing techniques, and equipment
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work in a fast-paced environment
- Customer-focused with a passion for delivering exceptional service
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to stay calm under pressure
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent; barista certification or related training preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 30 lbs, and work in a fast-paced environment
