Duration: 6+ Months
Primary Responsibilities:
- Operate power tools and heavy equipment such as chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump trucks, loader backhoes, motor graders, tractors with attachments.
- Perform manual labor as a Maintenance Operator.
- Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other hazardous road conditions.
- Attend work zone training and prepare work zones.
- Perform traffic control and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques.
- Identify workplace safety hazards, suggest improvements, and wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and laws.
- Participate as a working team member performing manual labor, including clearing drainage, cutting brush, pothole patching, and other road maintenance tasks.
- Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance, and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.
- Work outside normal hours during emergency operations, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Flag traffic and assist in setting up work zones.
- Perform manual labor with roadway maintenance work crews.
- Drive pick-ups and one-ton trucks.
- Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain safe work zones by staying aware and observant of surroundings.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
- Demonstrated experience operating equipment used in highway maintenance and construction activities.
- Experience with preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
- Experience in emergency operations such as snow removal, storm response, accident response, and cleanup.
- Ability to work outdoors in diverse weather conditions throughout all seasons.
- High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
- Ability to work outside normal hours during emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Valid CDL or CDL Permit.
