Facilities Technician, The People’s House
The White House Historical Association is a non-profit, non-partisan educational organization founded in 1961 by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to enhance the understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the Executive Mansion. For more than sixty years, the Association has produced award-winning books on a wide range of subjects related to the history of the President’s House and has actively fulfilled its educational mission with robust educational programming and retail offerings.
“The People’s House: A White House Experience” is a cutting-edge education center that tells the story of the Executive Mansion, its inhabitants, and the people who have dedicated their careers to its functions. It features exhibits and galleries that bring the White House and its storied history to life.
This is NOTa political position or a position with the United States Government. Proceeds from the sale of the Association's books and products are used to fund our educational mission.
The Association is seeking a Facilities Technician for “The People’s House: A White House Experience.”
Position Summary:
This position reports directly to the Director of Operations of the People’s House and works in close collaboration with the Facilities Manager, the Exhibits team, and external vendors.
Experience and Education:
- Experience: At least 2 years of experience in commercial property maintenance and repair, including cleaning.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent, with at least 1 year of additional formal education or on-the-job training in general maintenance, repair, and cleaning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Routine Maintenance and Cleaning: Conduct regular maintenance and cleaning tasks across the facility, including common areas, restrooms, cafeteria, and offices.
- Meeting Space Setup: Breakdown and setup of meeting spaces as required.
- Repairs: Perform small repairs such as fixing structural damage (e.g., doors, drywall) and handling plumbing and electrical issues.
- HVAC Monitoring: Oversee HVAC equipment to ensure effective climate control.
- Preventative Measures: Implement measures to prevent future maintenance issues.
- Safety Hazards: Identify and rectify potential safety hazards.
- Painting: Repaint common areas as needed.
- Service Requests: Address and complete service requests promptly and courteously.
- Ticket Systems: Utilize ticket systems to track and manage service requests.
- Tool Use: Safely operate heavy tools and equipment.
- OSHA Standards: Adhere to OSHA safety standards.
- Communication: Communicate effectively in person, in writing, and via two-way radio.
- Flexibility: Be prepared to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as necessary, including handling emergency situations.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Technical Skills: Basic knowledge of commercial property maintenance, cleaning, and repair.
- Multitasking: Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively and foster a team-oriented environment.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions/Hazards:
- Physical Requirements: Ability to perform light and heavy lifting, carry materials, and operate equipment. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Weather Conditions: Capability to work in all types of weather.
- Hazards: Exposure to chemicals and other materials used in maintenance. Manual dexterity and coordination required for hand and power tools.
Additional Requirements:
- Driving: Valid driver's license and a good driving record may be required.
- Availability: Willingness to be on-call for emergencies and work outside regular hours, including weekends and holidays.

This position requires a blend of technical proficiency, effective communication, and flexibility. The ideal candidate should be adept at handling a variety of maintenance and cleaning tasks while ensuring a safe and functional environment.
